The nuns of
the Sisters of St Francis Order ran St Ladislaus
High School from 1921 to 1982. The congregation of sisters
originated in 1855 in the city of Philadelphia. Faced with growing problems in his diocese, Bishop John W.
Neumann looked to enlist the services of European Sisters. Pope Pius IX counseled the bishop to
found an American community from within the ranks of his own flock. The community tends to the
needs of others and has foundations
throughout the country, including posts in Ireland and Puerto Rico.
